Error "'Edit Document' requires a Windows SharePoint Services-compatible application"

This error is very common for the Microsoft SharePoint user, to understand this error consider the given scenario:

1. You open a Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services website.
2. Open any document library to view.
3. And when you try to edit Microsoft Office document which is stored in the document library it display an error message on the screen like Error "'Edit Document' requires a Windows SharePoint Services-compatible application"

In the above given scenario the error message that appears will depend on what MS Office version you are using. If you are using MS 2007 version then 'Edit Document' needs a MS internet explorer 6.0 or greater or Windows SharePoint -compatible application. Or you are using MS office 2003 and earlier version then it is necessary that you are using SharePoint compatible application and Internet explorer 5.0 or greater to 'Edit Document'.

Causes of "'Edit Document' requires a Windows SharePoint Services-compatible application"

• SharePoint supported components including Office tool is not installed or get corrupt.

• A file named Owssupp.dll is registered wrongly in Windows.

How to Fix MS SharePoint Error?

Install SharePoint support- To install SharePoint support you can try the bellow given method and install SharePoint support:   

For Office XP User:

1. Click on the Start, and go to Control Panel.

2. Open Add or Remove Programs by clicking on it.

3. From the list of installed programs, select or click Microsoft Office XP and then Change.

4. Click on the Add or Remove Features -> Change which features are installed or remove specific           features, and then click Next.

5. From the Features to install box, expand Office Tools, by clicking the down arrow present next           to the Microsoft SharePoint Support, and click on Run from My Computer.

6. Click Update.

For 2003 user:

1. Click on the Start, and go to Control Panel.

2. Open Add or Remove Programs by clicking on it.

3. From the list of installed programs, select or click Microsoft Office 2003 and then Change.

4. Select Add or Remove Features, and then click Next.

5. Click to select the Choose advanced customization of application check box, and after it click               Next button.

6. From the Choose update options for applications and tools box, increase Office Tools, click on             the down arrow present next to the Windows SharePoint Services Support, and then select Run           from My Computer.

7. Click Update.

For 2007 User

1. Click on the Start, and go to Control Panel.
2. Open Add or Remove Programs by clicking on it.
3. From the list of installed programs, select or click Microsoft Office 2007 and then Change.
4. Open Add or Remove option and click on continue. 
5. Expand Office Tools 
6. Select the down arrow present next to the Windows SharePoint Services Support, and then select Run from My Computer.
7. Click Continue.
